Oxford Dictionaries

Despite decades of research, very little is known about why 10 to 12 percent of the world’s population are left-handed.

The “fighter hypothesis” maintains that left-handers have survived because they have had an advantage in physical combat.

And did you know that mothers who are over 40 at the time of a child’s birth are 128% are more likely to have a left-handed baby than a woman in her 20’s?

Things to avoid with the left hand:

- Good dining table etiquette requires passing food and drink to your right with the right hand. “What's important is that when several dishes are being passed at the same time, they all go in the same direction,” explains Emily Post. The rule could just as easily have been pass-to-the-left. But someone chose “right,” and so it is.

- According to a report commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers regarding how effectively different smartphones caught and sent radio signals, you’re likely to get better reception on an iPhone if you hold it in your right hand (and right ear) during a call. This could be because the left-left combination adds a greater obstruction between the phone’s antenna and the wireless signal than a right-right combination would.

- In India, the left hand is hand associated with personal hygiene — and that includes putting on and taking off your shoes. It’s also considered generally impure. That’s why you should never use it to pass on an item — be it the salt and pepper shaker, a food dish, or a business card.

Smuggle OWAD into a conversation, say something like:

“As a right-hander, I ask LEFTIES to sit on my left so not to bump hands whilst taking notes.”
